My '01 (in service 6-00) at 20K had cracks in the WP impeller last year
when it was changed and the tech said the TB looked like it had much more than 20K miles. I think 6 years should probably be the max, any time after that is a risk.

Well, Audi have upped the ante again, and now claim that it can be
80,000 miles before having the TB replaced, but I'd still stick with the 60k / 5 year rule (whichever comes first).
I had mine replaced along with the water pump impeller last year (the car was on around 52,000 miles @ 5 years old), and to be honest it looked in absolute mint condition.
But the peace of mind I now have driving around is soooo much greater than wondering if my engine is gonna blow on the next corner, or not.
Don't gamble with something that will cost you about 10% of the damaged product. ;-)
