Default Dealer wants to replace battery for $240 in 2000TT Quatro

I took my car in due to the instrument guages not moving. The dealer and he is wanting to replace the battery (as this is the probable cause) in the car for $240. I told him that sounds outrageous and would go elsewhwere. He then procedes to tell me that only the factory battery is safe in this car. The dealer in question is Boardwalk Audi in Dallas. What replaceent batteries are you guys using?

Default People are running Optima's, Diehards, Wal-Mart Specials, etc without issue

Tell the clown at the dealership that its gouging like this along with bad information and outright lies that are forcing you to take your business elsewhere. Then find a nice independant shop and build a relationship with them.

Default bull. Get optima red top. Does the car start? If so, batt is not the problem thats causing the

gauges to fail.

Now the problem is getting my car back without him gouging me for looking at it. I told him Audi just sent me a free multipoint checkup in the mail and would be using that. He nearly freaked when I told them it would be free. He said he needed it in hand prior to looking at the car. I told him I'd bring it when I picked the car up.

Anyone have any ideas about the guages intermittently working? I did have the instrument cluster replaced when I 1st purchaed the car in 2000.

Default If you are on your original battery then yes...>>

Low voltage will result in weird cluster behaviors. At 6 years, I'd put a new one in regardless..
