Default 2005 TT 1.8l quattro turbo tensioner bolt broke

Tensioner bolt broke causing timing belt to snap, valves hit all 4 pistons causing indents. Do I need to replace engine or can I have head rebuilt? Shop said cheaper to replace with used motor. Are they right?

Others have been able to save engines when this happened. If those pistons are only marked without being distorted or cracked there is a good chance that the head can be rebuilt and it be ok. No way to know for sure without pulling the head. A replacement engine for a 225 is hard to find. I was lucky enough though to find a good low mileage one when mine dropped a valve 7 years ago. Good luck!

Thanks for the info. Doesn't seem like the shop wants to pull head. Just about everyone I've spoken to seems to believe values & pistons are shot. Also, is there something else that caused the bolt to just snap.

I’m sure your mechanic will tell you there are vw engines all over the place that are the same. Look for 06a on the part number as well as make sure the crankshaft end that holds the flywheel is correct. The awp jetta engine can withstand up to 300hp on stock rods. Put some high beams in there 700hp easy. It’s a forged block so it’s very hardy. There are some other things to consider. The car is 15 years old maybe be better putting money down on a nice new bmw m class. Cars should be going down on price soon. It’s very quiet at the dealership. Just sneeze on the car you want and tell em you just got back from China.

Unfortunately, the motor specs surpass my expertise. So, I guess I'm at the mercy of the mechanics. Love the car and other then the motor, it is in excellent condition. I am however going to ditch it once I it fixed but, can see giving it away for $500 to shop! Love the part about sneezing on dealer though. I'll have to try that once I start shopping, thanks!!!
