Default In the engine? You'll want to figure out what it is sooner rather than later

Tranny or diff I wouldn't worry quite as much.

Default I was skeptical that it would do anything in the engine because of the presence of the oil filter...

but it looks like it catches micro fine stuff maybe not caught by the filter itself. So it's extra protection for the engine to not recirculate this stuff. Otherwise, the engine is fine - but you never know with this 1.8T sludge problem.

Our TT started it's like on Mobil 1 after the 1st dealer oil changes, now it's on Elf/Total, so I think I have decent protection in there.

I recommend getting this or a magnet on the filter as extra protection

Default Here in lies the explanation....

The drain plug is in the sump. The sump collects oil the oil after it lubricates and cools the engine. Heavy particles like metal (sludge) can sink to the bottom of the sump (Oil pan)) especially if you don't do regular oil changes. The lube oil pump does not take a suction from the bottom of the sump. The oil from the oil pump is filtered. All the particles flushed out of the engine don't necessarily get filter. A magnetic plug gives a very good indication of bad things happening in your engine. In the engine it doesn't really aid in cleaning the oil very much. In diffs and manual trannies it does because they are normally splash lubricated and no filtering happens.
