Just picked up my 'new' 04 3.2 and have a whining noise I thought may be tires, but now I'm not so sure. When I test drove the car, all was well, but now I'm a bit concerned the noise may be indication of something more serious.

I have not heard tire noise before inside a car so maybe it's nothing to worry about, but with the windows up, all I can hear is this whining noise which is consistent with road speed. With the windows down, I can't hear any noises which appear to be the tires. I am sure its not a wheel bearing as the noise is the same in a straight line and when turning left or right (unless its a bearing on each side of the car).

I am also pretty sure its not tire noise as the sound is pretty much the same on all pavement surfaces.

I plan to jack up tha car this weekend so I can spin the wheels to check for bearing roughness. In the meantime, any suggestions as to what else I should check for? I also plan to change all the oils (tranny, engine and haldex) at the same time.

BTW, the car has 103000 miles on the clock.

Mine has never made any noise other than that sweet v6 growl. Do the flapper mod asap. Good luck.

Your mileage makes me very happy. I have a measly 20-30k on it an hope for a long life, as it is not a daily driver.

my car whined like that and it ended up being a bad rear haldex unit. not too fun. or you could have bad tires............MUCH better a problem.
