Default 2001 TT Quatro Turbo Won't Start

Very little information out there it seems. One morning about a year ago the car would turn over, run for a second, then die. Logic said this might be a fuel filter, so I replaced that. It didn't help. Logic and forms said it was likely a fuel pump. Yesterday I received and installed that, along with a new battery. The car didn't start.
I did all of this because we are retired and the little car is expensive to have fixed, which we have done often.
It is my wife's little car which she loves so I suppose unless someone posts an easy fix, I will be taking it back to our European car repair store.
Thanks for any suggestions you may have.

I am no mechanic, but it order for the car to start you need fuel, air and a little electricity or spark or whatever they call it ;-). you haven't gotten the car started in a year? it could be a lot of different things

We just discovered a very strange thing, to me anyway. Examining the fuse to the fuel pump and pulled it. The fuel pump began to run. Put the fuse back in and it stopped running. It still doesn't turn over. It probably isn't getting fuel to the injectors, but I would sure like to have an opinion about the fuse.

After searching the forum we decided it must be the crank shaft sensor so yesterday I found a hex bolt up near the top of the oil filter and managed to take it out with only a small amount of bleeding and damage to my arm. The bolt had a metal tube attached instead of a wire. I popped the tube out away from the engine looking for the sensor and something dropped into the bottom of the engine. I must have taken out the wrong hex nut but I can't find another. What an adventure!
