Default Is a front sway bar really neccesary?

I may be completely wrong here, but with a rear sway bar the understeer is greatly reduced, wouldn't adding a front one almost counter what you are trying to accomplish with one in the rear?

Default that's the rumor. Some race without a front sway bar at all.

Shine Racing Service tends to preach against front sway bars, especially on vw's.

From their website:

"* Volkswagens have between 65-70% of their weight over their front wheels which causes understeer. Larger front sway bars cause more understeer and unload the inside front wheel during hard cornering resulting in wheelspin. This is a major handicap, especially when autocrossing. Shine Racing suspensions are designed to minimize understeer and increase grip."
