Default directional tire as spare, is it ok?

Hello,

I am replacing my tires with all-season tires (Pirelli PZero Nero M&S) on my Audi A4 3.0Q SP.

I have a brand new spare which is a max perf summer tire and that is a directional tire (Dunlop SP sport 9090 - original equipment).

Is that a problem? Should I also replace it with the Pirelli (that are non-directional)

Thanks,

Tarmac

Default You don't have too, but there is a benefit.

directional tires are designed to help avoid hydroplaning. Putting one on backwards will help induce hydroplaning instead. So if you actually have a blow-out and then experience heavy rain before you get the Pirelli repaired, then you'll just have to be extra careful when you come across standing water.

However, the 9000's aren't all that great at anti-hydroplaning, so it would stand to reason that in reverse they don't do much to induce it either.

Anyway, the odds of getting a blow-out are low, the odds of it being raining then are lower, and the odds of the blowout being on the "wrong side" are half that ;-) It's not that big a deal. You'd have to be really hard-core into rain driving to really care about this, which I am, and am seriously considering getting a non-uni-directional tire for my spare wheel just for this reason. But I also acknowledge that it's ridiculous of me to be fussing about it.
