Repost for more feedback---Don't want to crash in Tahoe, help!

Okay, call me slow. I have read the recommendations for good winter tires. I have a 98QTip with the all weather pkg. It came with M+S rated 205/55/16. I heard the stock 8000s on the sports pkg are dangerous in the snow...how about my 205's? Planning to take first drive to/in the snow soon---advise. Thanks in advance.

Which tires did you get in the 205/55/16 size? Sounds like, if they're mud and snow rated that they won't be dangerous like the Z rated SP2000/ 8000's that the rest of us have. Probably won't be ideal, but if they're all seasons, they'll get you through the snow with quattro. You'll still be happier all year long with tires dedicated to the season, but you may be able to live with the compromise. Enjoy Tahoe..

Anyway...you should be fine in Tahoe with either of these two. Now, on dry surfaces...that is another situation altogether. I will look for you when I got to Tahoe this winter. :-)

I had the GY RSAs when I had stock tires. At the track events, we like to say that RSA stands for Really Screams Alot. Even when you're not pushing hard they are screeching.
As for winter. I spent my first winter on them before I got my snows. You'll do fine. The snows are much better but your 'all season' RSAs are acceptable.

I used the RSAs for one winter at Tahoe. They are OK, but you still need to be careful - they don't stop as well as true snows on the slick stuff that is common during a Tahoe storm. Also, I got stuck in an icy driveway w/ the RSAs on an A4Q - wheels spinning, EDL pulsing, not moving a bit... (well, at least until we opened the garage so I could get a moving start!!).

I'm up there nearly every weekend in ski season, so I opt for snow tires. If you only go up occassionally, the RSAs should be fine as long as you take it easy & remember how long it takes to stop on ice...
