Default Speed Ratings of Tires, Pirelli

I just found out some interesting information due to a customer inquiry. Apparently the new model tires have a speed rating based on overall ratings. For instance the Pirelli P7000SS that I have been offering in the wheel/tire packages have a "Z" rating. However, after discussions w. Pirelli they have a further rating of "W" --which translates to a 168mph speed rating. The older P7000SS of several years ago, which some retailers still have--not me--have a speed rating of Z or 149mph. Finally, the hi-performance P-zero's, although Z rated, come with a minimum rating of 'W' and some have a "Y" rating which is still higher. Just thought I'd let you know in case you're doing some hi-speed driving!! Gary.

Default Re: Speed Ratings of Tires, Pirelli

Hi Gar...it's me again.

Isn't "Z" rating defined as anything over 149 mph? And "W" rating is not to exceed 168 mph?

"V" used to mean not to exceed 149 mph...with "Z" covering anything over 149. But the "governing bodies" added W and Y...

Maybe the older Z rated P7000s were re-classified to W under the new rating system. Or do you really think there's a difference?
