i remeber i found a really nice write up, and it also had directions on how to take the buttons out so you could clean them. Since they like to stick if you spill some soda or something sticky. but i don't know where it is.

First thing, open the ashtray and there will be two screws on the top corners. Take the ashtray out by removing the light, and it will pop right out. Might be a good idea to remove the shifter surround as well. Next, you will see two clips on the top of the unit, they are close the edge. I took a flathead and pushed them down alittle and it slid right out...hope it helps.
