Default Storage net in footwell

There is a storage net on the left wall of the front passenger footwell:

The 2013 manual only says "Storage net in footwell" in the Storage General Overview on p. 76. Other items have a page number directing you to further explanations. Not this one. At first I though it was for the umbrella, but it is too tight. Newspaper? Does anybody still read those?

I am completely perplexed as to the purpose of this "feature". What do you use it for?

Hot pocket holder...haha.

Yep, I thought it was for an umbrella too, but I can't imagine one small enough the fit. Then I was thinking, maybe a map holder? But with all the NAV and techy stuff around, paper maps are probably way too archaic to be a consideration. I wonder what it is really for?

My wife has a very compact totes umbrella that fits perfectly. My thought was also an ice scraper--just not a big one

I am surprised Scott's wife has a umbrella that fits. My net is so tight I am not even sure a can fit a folded magazine in.

Thanks everybody for your reply. At least now I know I am not the only one!

Here is a picture. Fit is not as perfect as I described, this is one tiny umbrella however.

You have to think like a German engineer... get inside his head... find out what makes him tick... then you may find your answer.

Have you ever removed and looked at the gauge cluster from a Porsche 944? I did and tried to think as you suggest above. That was a month ago and I still have a headache. ;-)
