Can the Bose receiver a 2004 TT be replaced with a Pioneer DEH-X 9500BHS CD receiver?

I want to update the stereo for one of todays modern car stereo receivers. Can just the receiver be replaced?

You can fit a newer receiver, not all units will fit under the flap.

I had a Kenwood X994 which worked well and could be set to red display.

There are a couple of things that are required:

Bose Harness which uses the RCAs from the new head unit.
Power harness, this will need to be slightly re-wired to provide switched power from the ignition to overide the original AUDI OEM radio CANbus switch-on.
Floating ground adapter(s) to prevent "popping" when changing source/ modes on the head unit.
Inline antenna amp with powered amplifier.
Adapter Faceplate, the Metra and TTstuff ones work best. AI and Scosche need to be modified to fit.
