A4 Wagon hatch warning light on when door closed

I have a 2005.5 A4 Avant Wagon. When I closed the hatchback door today, the "hatch door open" warning light came on, even though the door is firmly closed. The cargo compartment light stays on (unless I manually turn it off). Also, when I use the key to lock the car, there is no beep to indicate that the doors are locked (event though all the doors are locked, including the hatch).

Ideas?

Maybe the latch mechanism has loosened and moved slightly. Use a screwdriver to close the latch and see what signals are impacted. If the latch looks closed, then you probably have to remove the liner and take a closer look at the latch mechanism and any wires attached to it.
