Default max a/c button???

Driving down the highway the other day wondering why the car has no max button for the a/c - just hit it and it goes to max. I know you can turn the **** down to low. So, I start fiddling around with the a/c and thought I discovered a way, like pressing and holding a button, that the a/c went to max cooling. Is there such a "shortcut" ? Can't seem to remember if I was in my car now or my wife's, but it's driving me crazy and now I can't seem to find anything in he manual or duplicate it.

I've never looked for a way to immediately hit the high or low setting on the climate controls, but sometimes I use the recirculation button (the one with the curved arrow) so the A/C unit uses only the cabin air for a while. It seems to help get the temperature to a more comfortable point a little bit faster. Once you're at a comfortable point, switch the recirc mode back off so the air won't get stale. Of course, with you being in New Orleans with that wicked summer humidity, maybe nothing is going to help!

A MAX A/C function typically means a high blower speed in recirculate mode. Since, on Auto, when the car in hot inside the blower will already be set to high, all you need to do is press the "Recir" button to get the desired effect.

Kind of like when you hit the defrost button it auto turns the blower setting all the way up to 11. And that's better because it's one better than 10.

Audi engineers must have been a fan of the Tap.

In cars with manual HVAC, the "Max" button usually turns on the air recirculation and nothing else. It's (literally) the same setting as pressing both the AC button and the recirculation button. However, in some cars "Max" mode will actually allow the evaporator to reach a lower temp before the AC pump cycles off to prevent the evaporator from freezing up. I owned a Ford that cycled the AC compressor off at (IIRC) 45°F in regular mode but went down to 40°F if Max was pressed. Conversely, some cars have/had an "Eco" button on the AC that did something similar: The pump would cycle off to save fuel at a higher temp (like about 50°F) in Eco mode, but otherwise would stay on until 45°F.

In cars with automatic climate control, if there's a Max AC button it does three things: Sets the temp to its lowest setting, sets the fan to its maximum speed, and turns recirculation on. In some cases it also adjusts the compressor cycle as described above, but that's rare now that compressors have been made so much more efficient than they used to be.

Audi and many other makers now omit the Max button altogether. Recirculation is automatic unless you turned that off in the MMI settings. The system will run in "Max" mode if it needs to. If a user really wants max mode, they can set the temp to whichever extreme and leave it there for as long as they can stand it. If you've disabled automatic recirculation via your MMI settings, you'll need to press that button yourself.
