Default Yakima Rail Grab

I've been searching for a set of roof racks for our Q7 2011 TDI
We will be using it primarily for Kayak and maybe a cargo box

Whispbar - we can leave it on all the time but expensive
OEM - sits higher but I've always like OEM
Yakima rail grab - look like the simplest solution, just attaches to the existing rail and cheap ($250)

Any recommendations? Anyone using it for Kayak?

I have the rail grab system, but you need to take the front rail off when not in use as it intefers with the sunroof,
The back roof opens fine.

Also, you want to make sure you order a special pin/claw system that locks the towers into place.

Pros-Cheaper alternative and pretty low profile
Cons- No sunroof

thanks... i definitely want to operate my sunroof with it... so i guess grab rails are out.

OEM or Whispbar are my other choices.

the yakima system for the Q7 is AWFUL!

dont get me wrong, i like yakima systems, use to sell them for a summer job and had them on previous cars. May buy a system for my s4 but they dropped the ball hard on the q7 application. extremely poor fitment. I had to actually call yakima for extra pieces to make it work semi-properly

As long as you order that pin/claw accessory I mention above, they clip on fine. However the drawback is the front sunroof will not open with the bar in place.

I had the GrabRails already for my old car, and managed to snag the Audi pin adapters from etrailer.com for $0.01 plus shipping (that's their online price!)

The install took about 10 minutes, and it's a very positive connection.

There is a little bit of a clearance issue with the front sunroof panel, but the overlap seems to be less than 1/4". Has anyone tried grinding away the inside corners of the front GrabRails to allow clearance for the glass panel? I'm tempted to do so this weekend.

there is a phillip head screw in the way of allowing you to shave the corner down.
