By "drivetrain" do you mean the engine, transmission, differentials, et cetera, or just the engine (and possibly transmission)?
Just the engine would be easy-ish. All 5-cylinders from Audi have the same transmission bolt pattern so it would drop in just fine. I'm sure there would be some fabrication, as with any engine swap. Adding the transmission to the swap may require different mounting points to be made, though I'm not as familiar witht he later cars so I wouldn't know what specific transmission it has. More details would make the question easier to answer. -Rog |

Okay, that shouldn't be too hard. I looked it up briefly... I know there are 01E transmission swaps out there, so that's doable. I'm assuming it's the five-speed? And the 20vt is certainly popular, so no problem there.
This is probably the closest project to what you're describing: http://www.motorgeek.com/viewtopic.php?f=6&t=13390 Warning: there's a LOT of chit chat, so skim and look for pictures to find the actual "doing something constructive" parts. I know there are certain details that make it different, but from doing my 10vt swap I know you'll have to do some standard things, like relocating the battery (to the trunk is your best bet). The 20vt is nice because the exhaust and intake are on opposite sides so that means less fiddling with space issues. If you do it, be sure to make a project thread out of it. ![]() -Rog |
