Default What I need to know when replacing a turbo

Hay Guys

My 2001 1.9TDI A4 tractor is in need of a replacement turbo :-/

Due to the costs involved I'm possibly looking at doing the replacement myself by buying it either from Turbo Exchange or TurboDirect.

I need to know from all you clever okes out there how simple this is to do.

1. Is it a simple bolt on bolt off item
2. Is there anything I need to know when doing it e.g. bleeding the oil through the turbo or whatever else there may be
3. Is there any reprogramming that will be needing to be done?

Thanks in advance!

Don't know much about the diesel turbos, but on the gas turbo it is in fact a "simple" (read on) bolt on / off. "Priming" with a little oil and spinning before install is a good idea and running the car at idle after it is back together for a while to make sure it is well lubricated before putting any load on it. The biggest problem you tend to have in removing / installing a turbo or any other exhaust compoenent (including o2 sensors) is frozen bolts, stripped threads etc. Use lots of "liquid wrench" or your favorite penetrating oil.

thank you for that...

Is there a turbo replacement kit one can buy which will containing all the necessary gasket, o-rings nuts and bolts needed for when replacing a turbo...

The turbo has not blown up or seized and apparently just "wear and tear" is there a need to drain the oil lines?

I'm rather convinced I could do the job myself and save on a few $$$ just want to make sure I have gone over everything there is to know :-[

Not sure about the kit. I would call one of the on-line parts company like ECSTuning and visit with one of their technical guys.

Just out of curiousity, what is your turbo doing?

Turbo replacements are pretty straight forward. You'll need all new gaskets and some crush washers for oil and coolant lines.

Just adding oil to the CHRA is simply not enough. You'll need to disconnect the the injectors and coils ( or in your case which ever applies to the ignition of a diesel engine) and crank the engine 10-15 seconds with 1 minute breaks between cycles for 5-7 minutes. This will prime the turbo with oil and get all the lines filled back up with oil as well.

Let me know if you have any other questions.

Or pull the fuel pump fuse All it will do is crank. But before you put the new turbo on, pull the fuse then start the car. This will remove the remaining fuel from the lines and the car will die as soon as the fuel in the lines empties (about 2 seconds) then, continue and put the new turbo on.
