Default 04 Blown Turbo!?!?!?

I'm going to look at an 04 that the guys said needs a turbo, I can bring my VagCom to scan it, will that tell me for sure it needs a turbo and not a piston etc. He said it runs fine but smokes. Any ideas? If it needs a turbo is it worth $5000, it has 125,000 miles,in nice shape.I'm going to look at an 04 that the guys said needs a turbo, I can bring my VagCom to scan it, will that tell me for sure it needs a turbo and not a piston etc. He said it runs fine but smokes. Blown turbo will produce lots of smoke. That tends to kill the cat also. Take it to a mechanic that knows what they're doing with turbo Audis before you pay any money for it. How much does the seller want?

The guy is asking $5000, just trying to distinguish between turbo smoke and cylinder smoke , which i would imagine both would be blue, white would be head issues, don't know how much the Vag Com will tell.

Don't think VAGCOM will tell you anymore than what is obvious. The guy who owns this car has abused it. I will probably curse myself by saying this, but I have had 3 cars with turbos with a total of over 500K miles and never blown a turbo. And, who knows what will happen to the tranny a few months after you buy it, or head, or ????. Run away very fast and find a good well maintained car. You will save money and heartache in the long run.

I agree with Lyle. I've never had a blown turbo either. I know guys that put in 250K on chipped cars without a problem. On the other hand, I got a buddy who managed to kill both of the turbos on his B5 S4 after only 40K. Yes, he was kicking the crap of that S4 and the next guy who bought it (at ~60K) had to put in some $5K immediately into the car. That's on a car with 60000 km (~37000 miles). The turbo blowing out could be a fluke but I'd be very cautious with that car.

Besides beating the **** out of it , can anything else do it, I was thinking maybe the sludge situation, clogged up oil pickup etc. I don't see a lot, but have seen several over the past year, listed for sale needing turbo's. I kinda thought it was like the 6.0 Ford diesel, you come accross those blowing turbos quite often, mine actually had a new one put in after 6000 miles and no beating on. Not trying to sugar coat it, just thought it might be a viable issue.

In my mind, part of beating the crap out of the car is not maintaining it. If the turbo is sludged, so are the small passages in your cams, oil pump, oil screen, etc. If it has been running like that for a while, you are looking at worn rings, cam lobes, etc, etc. Poor maintenance in the cooling system area means overheating and blown head. Etc, etc

By the way, the Ford Diesel Turbo is a much different animal and relatively new technology. It is a variable geometry turbo which moves the vanes themselves versus stators plus they are operating in a much higher pressure environment. I have 2 friends myself that have replaced the turbos on their Fords.

Ya I hear ya, it's true, I have heard of sludge problems with these cars, though I've owned 5 and never had an issue, it's true, if it's sludged there's gotta be other stuff going on if it affected the turbo, that's why everyone I buy, first thing I do is flush the hell out of it, do the Sea Foam thing and fresh synthetic and then religiously change it, thanks for shedding light on it, I think I'll pass on it. I'm actually looking at a 03, very nice shape with a light hit to the front end that never deployed the air bags, needs a hood, grill, and AC condensor for $3000, at least I know the condition, the motor runs like a top and you can just see the car was well maintained, interior mint, and I can do the work myself.

I believe you have made a good choice. I have walked away from several cars simply on a intuition (who says guys don't have good intuition) that there were problems lurking based solely on the lack of evidence the car had been maintained.

Good luck in your search
