Default Q5 or allroad?

allroad: http://www.insideline.com/audi/a4/20...rst-drive.html

Stunning!

Same platform, one higher than the other. One shorter than the other. More motor decisions for the Q5, but the 2.0t in the allroad is more than ample. One more expensive base price by some $3,000. One more space, the other more "utility".

Q5 or allroad? Very difficult!!!

Most likely it will come down to whether you like wagons/estates or CUV's. The Allroad and Q5 share the same platform. From the drivers seat it appears to the identical dash and controls. It's worth considering if you are looking at the Q5's.

I'm leaning toward the allroad myself, although there are several other vehicles I'm considering. We love my wife's Q5, but I've historically been a wagon guy. I prefer the driving dynamics offered by the lower ride height and longer vs taller cargo area. The additional mpg doesn't hurt either. Of course, the allroad will have exactly one available powertrain, so the 3.0T or 3.0 TDI could sway me to take the Q5. I will say I don't like the contrasting gray body cladding on the allroad (I realize I'm in the minority), so I would have to go with one of the three colors offered in the full paint finish trim. I'm in no hurry, so I'll have plenty of time to weigh my options.

There's an article on the Allroad in the current Automobile magazine (June 2012). I agree, it's a great looking wagon and I'd definitely consider it - I nearly bought one a few years ago - so it's terrific to see the new one. I look forward to full reviews; I suspect it'll come out on top of the Volvo XC70 and others in the class.

One quick point. From the pics in Automobile magazine, the dashboard design on the Allroad is from the A4 not the Q5.

i was excited for the all road as i thought it looked stunning and i've always liked them. However this new allroad seems to be based on the A4 Avant. The rear seating room is terrible. no legroom. Very small back seat. I was not impressed with that. Very cramped on the inside. I sat in it at the New York International Auto Show.

I would say allroad all day but it has a lot less room. Older A4 avants had more room, so I don't see why the new one should be so much less. But if space is not a concern I'd say wagon for sure.

Not that I know a whole lot about car aerodynamics, but I'm pretty sure the Q5 has a significant amount more drag than the A4, much more in fact. Maybe the AllRoad will be a nice midpoint between the Q5 and A4.

OP, this is the A4 Allroad (basically an A4 avant with body cladding). In the past the Allroad was based on the A6 platform and so had significantly more space than this A4 variant. In Aus. We only get the A6 Allroad (AFAIK). They are a beautiful car but due to how import duties work in this country they start at about $105k (3.0 TDI) and go up from there, the Q5 on the other hand starts at about $70k (2.0 TFSI) so quite a considerable difference.

Yip, that is right... The USA version is based on the A4 and gets the 2.0t motor only. My reference to space was confined to the trunk (boot) only, where the allroad (A4) has more and the Q5 is lacking somewhat. I agree that the Q5 has more passenger space.

Here in the USA the allroad is going to cost more than the Q5 (I saw a base cost of some $39,000) and will probably stay a niche model.

Stunning though and it will be a lot easier to load kayaks on the roof. The main reason why the car appeals to me.

The allroad has 50 cubic feet of cargo capacity with the second row seats folded and the Q5 has 57.3 cubic feet. It just has more room.
