Default Tiptronic shift quality

I have an '07 2.0T tiptronic and here in hilly SF, after coming to a complete stop on an incline, upon starting off again the transmission seems to be in 2nd gear and the car hesitates, then there is a rather hard and uncoordinated jerky downshift into 1st. It makes the car very hard to drive smoothly from a stop. (And my passengers think I'm an idiot).

Otherwise, the transmission works beautifully. There isn't the same kind of problem on flat ground. Is this normal for these cars? I find it very frustrating, and the dealer wants to charge me too much just to diagnose. I couldn't replicate it for him because he's located in a flat part of town. Help!

I have a 2006 A4 2.0tq with 6sp tip. My tip does a couple of odd things.

First, something like the thing you mentioned. Unless you come to a DEAD STOP, it generally doesn't go back down to first gear. Unless of course you're rolling slowly and punch it, then it will shoot down into first and take off. When it does this, I sometimes notice a lag. Pretty significant, like a full second. It's a little scary when you do this to cut across a busy streeet and the car doesn't move.

Second, it shifts out of first gear REALLY quickly. Like when I'm barely moving from a stop. Unless I mash the throttle down.

Third, the downshift from 3rd to 2nd when braking is pretty jerky.

I had a Passat w/1.8t & 5sp tip previously, and it was flawless. I loved that you could temporarily set it to sport mode, too. Seems the 6sp tip in my A4 doesn't work as well.

My solution to all of this is that I use manual shift mode a lot.

Eric, welcome aboard! Do you know how many miles are on the car? Has the transmission ever been serviced?

Ditto, I have a 7sp CVT w tip, the tiptronic seems to have a mind of its own unless I am driving with noticeable command. I have almost no authority on when to downshift when braking-- seems to do it on its own as well.

Thanks for the info, all!

The car has 55K miles and has never had a transmission service (that I know of). It is still under a CPO warranty until July.
