Default New To Turbo and Live in Phx

Just wondering ordered a new Q5 and will be here in 3 weeks.
Got the 2.0t and have never owned a turbo engine. Heard you should let it cool or idle for 60 secs before shutting it off. Is this needed in normal driving with our heat? I heard the rumors just want to know if it is advised.

Dont live in your heat but driving turbos (mainly diesel) for well over 30 years, heres my take.
Its not about sitting with engine running while turbo cools down so much as it is about not blasting in and switching off so turbo is (wait for the word) "spooling" down with no lubrication or cooling.
All you really need to do is think ahead a minute or two. Go easy the last bit.
If you can use overrun to slow you as you arrive anywhere then your job is done.
When you arrive you generally gather up stuff or get off the bluetooth or think about what you are going to do next. Use those few seconds up before you turn off the engine.
Listen to your turbo, if you drive up a slope and stop often you can just hear the dying whistle. When you turn off too early you are already out of the car and locked up but you can still hear it spooling down. Learn from that.
If you just follow the few simple steps I suggest you will also find your brakes smell less and last longer too.
If the 1956 in your username is a birth date then I am sure you are going to be fine.
60 seconds? Maybe if you pulled in for gas off a freeway after speeding uphill for half an hour sure... seeing as you asked in the first place I'm sure you will be fine.
Look foward to reading others opinions here too.

Thing of the past those turbo cool down periods. especially vehicles built and designed for turbos. They can cool of on their own if you shut it down via the electronic waterpump
