Aux Pump Replacement: Half Way Home

2001 A6 2.7T APB

It was a big night as I got all the disconnections finished and raised the manifold...what a moment...the anticipation for what I would see was exhilarating. And I was not disappointed - it looked like a bomb went off under there. There was coolant pooled everywhere, old crusty coolant hanging like stalagmites, even some medium sized bugs perhaps attracted by the sweet smell of coolant were now preserved forever like prehistoric fossils, you can tell they'd been there for quite some time.

And then there's the old aux pump. Wow, this thing was done for. The entire forward pointing hose connection and surrounding pump body was completely blown out. It never stood a chance down there, made of plastic and electrical to boot. I love my Audi, but I'm pretty disappointed that such a critical juncture in the coolant system is so error prone, and so deeply buried in the engine. Pictures can be provided upon request of any of this.

So I called it a night, but I look forward to installing the new pump and getting it all back together.

Just a couple questions. In BaysideRS4's writeup (http://forums.audiworld.com/showthre...ight=baysideS4) he mentions a "throttle adaptation" once the job is done. What is this, and will I need to do it even though I did not disconnect the battery?

Also, should I do a coolant system flush when finished?

Anything else I should take care to do while I'm at this stage?

Thanks for everyone's assistance to this point, and thanks for reading. I know this job is probably easy stuff for some folks, but it's uncharted territory for me, and I'm pretty happy to have made it this far...wish me luck getting her back together.

As long as you did not disconnect the throttle body from the wiring harness, no TBA will be required.

Thanks. Unfortunately I'm not sure if I did or didn't disconnect the throttle body from the wiring harness.

Maybe the attached pic will help. Are you talking about one of the two electrical connections in the center of the pic? If so, I did have to disconnect both of these.

will these cars auto adapt the TB if the battery is disconnected and the key is turned to on (but not starting the car) ??

i only ask because i know the MK4 Jettas/Golfs/Passats would do that

You should not have any issues by not performing a TBA. What you may encounter is that sometimes after disconnecting the TB and battery, is that you get an error trying to do a TBA. If you have any issues with idle or the AC will not come on after the repairs, you will need to perform the TBA.

As for this repair, experienced techs don't remove the intake to replace the aux pump. You simply remove the TB and and disconnect the hoses at the front and back that attach to the pump and slide the pump out.

i have removed tons and tons of throttle bodys, there connector, and disconnected batterys and have had one time the tba is needed. And it sat battery disconnected for 2 months. There have been times where people have had the battery disconnected for like a month or more and then the car wont idle, and its required to re adapt it. I wouldnt not worry about it at all.
