Default Push/Start Convience Key

I tried searching the forum, but didn't find anything listed regarding this.

I'm wondering if anyone knows how the Push Start feature works? For example, does the key have to be in a certain range for the car to start, but then once it is started it doesn't matter if the key is in a certain range and the car will run until you push the push/start button, or does the key have to be in a certain range when the car is started and for it to continue running so if you went out of range the car would shut off. If there is a range the key needs to stay within, what is that?

I'm curious to know because of two scenarios, one, where I live the mailbox is by the gate about 30ft away in an enclosed shelter, so I'm wondering what would happen if I got out of the car with the key in my pocket to go get the mail.

The other scenario, which hopefully will never happen is getting car jacked and the key is in your pocket, would the person be able to drive the car or would it stop when it was a certain distance away?

I did a very small test one day by just getting out of the car and seeing if I could walk around it. The real world scenario there would be picking someone up at the airport and getting out of the car and helping them with their luggage. The car stayed on the whole time when I tried that, but I have been reluctant to just leave the car running and walk far away to see what happens.

Any insight would be greatly appreciated.

The car will continue to run, no matter how far away the key is, until it's shut off.

The key needs to be inside the car in order for it to start. Sometimes when I lean in to hit the start button for accessory, it will give me the 'key out of range' error message on the DIS (Driver Information System). The key being in the little pocket above the right pocket of my jeans.

As noted above, the car will run until it's shut off or runs out of gas. I've forgotten my key once when the wife was driving home and we did a swap over to me driving to go run an errand. I got out of range and got the 'key out of range' error message on the DIS (Driver Information System) again. I left the car running when I got to my destination, but when I got back in the car, I hit the start button due to muscle memory. Ugh!

The best feature of Advanced Key is the inability to lock the key either in the passenger compartment or more importantly, the trunk. That alone is worth the price of admission. I honestly have never heard of anyone on the boards being unhappy with the feature.

One good reason I would never have this :

That for the responses. That is good information.

The article is interesting, but I'm not all that concerned about someone doing that. I think there are a lot more unsophisticated criminals out there then sophisticated so I think the odds of a car getting stolen using that method is a lot lower then other methods available.

We once gave a valet the wrong key (we have two Audis with advanced key). That was funny. They were able to drive it away and park it, but then couldn't bring it back around to us. And I imagine they weren't able to lock it, though I didn't ask them (would rather not know -- nothing was missing).

Too bad we can't program the vehicle to auto lock. My 2005/2008 Corvette, 2006 Cadillac STS, and 2008 Mazda CX-9 had smart keys, and I was able to program them to auto lock after shut down and last door was closed.

I LOVE the feature. When I am going out on the weekend in my jeans, I can carry the fob without the metal top and it takes up little space in my pocket. I am not a fan of how the Audi key insertion startup method works. I'd rather turn a regular key instead of inserting and pushing. I am glad I don't have to do that. I also like not fiddling with finding the trunk button while my hands are full.

One quirk is that if you are running a hose on the car while the fob is in your pocket, the water will lock and unlock the car. It will chirp a lot. I was told to leave the fob in the car to prevent that.
