Thanks guys for the tips on removing the needles. Will be very useful on my next attempt, hopefully successful this time.

To put them back on, just push them to the desired depth and twist them to adjust them back to zero. If you miss your mark then go around one more time until you get it right. It's that simple. No tools required.
