Default front struts

do the front struts go in these cars? I was told not to wqorry about them at all for both my A4 and A6. I have a wobble in teh front suspension when I hit a bump just wondering if it's a strut or control arm gone.. only control arm not replaced in a whilke is the lower front attached to the strut. could that make the car wobble hitting bumbs??

OMG. Front struts go on ANY car...it just depends. So do control arms/balljoints/bushings.

You have to inspect the front end from time to time. Chances are the shocks are gone on your 96.

Hard to say what you think is a wobble...is there noise associated with it or just a general looseness/loss of control?

Last time I had a strut/shock really die on me was on a volvo 760T going across WV plateau...front was so uncontrollable with minor road shocks that couldn't go over 55mph!!!
THAT car ate front end struts (volvo OEM BTW) every 100K miles or so. Had the car to 270K miles plus.
Changing the TB (non-interference engine) on that car took maybe 1 hour!

Struts are more durable than average, but all struts are wear items.

The control arms are a notorious weakness, as you should know if you have ever read or searched this forum.

Good point. They have shocks with coils over the shocks...just not adjustable coilover shocks.

However, we all know what he means....

That's wrong..they also provide a perch for the springs on the front and rear. Like I said before...they're coil overs, they're just not adjustable coil overs.

Think about struts and think about a shock, and the differences that apply in a geometric sense.

?? I agree it's not a strut...but recognize the shck has a spring perch and a spring. It is in fact a coilover.

A strut carries other loads, that's why we have UC's not strut bearings and our shocks don't turn just the up-right.
