Default Newbie Ur-S6 Power Steering Issue

The car that this post concerns isn't actually mine its my brothers. He has asked me to drive it out to him form Nova Scotia to Saskatchewan (about 4200 km or 2610 miles). The problem is that when I pulled it out of the garage a couple of days ago a high pressure hose started gushing hydraulic fluid. From what I can gather on the forum this is most likely a J hose. In the attached picture the leak would be right where the foam insulation starts. I know I can get these rebuilt but I may not have enough time to do this as I need to leave on Tuesday the 24th and with the weekend coming up I may not be able to get it rebuilt in time. Is there anything I can do to at least be able to drive the car out to him or is the only way to have the hose rebuilt and re-installed?

Gulp, gushing, you say? That is one nasty looking metal tube as well. It is wet; are you sure it is not leaking as well?

Where the foam insulator starts, the metal tube connects to a flexible hose center section. The source of your gushing leak is probably in that rubber hose. The only magic here is that the hose has a tube inside it with a restrictor in it to dampen pump pulses from the high pressure fluid flow, and you would like to retain that in any rebuild. I am attaching a link to a hose for sale on the audifans.com marketplace. If the link is not here, it was stripped, but you can just look on the audifans web site for parts and search j hose. This is a well known and honest seller who can probably help with how to get it through Canadian customs quickly.

I would treat this as a godsend and jump on it. : )

So I dropped the hose of to get rebuilt today and he said he might actually be able to finish it today which would be awesome. That hose that's for sale is a sweet deal I'll see if I can convince my brother to buy it to have as a backup. I'll also report back with an update on how my rebuilt hose fares whenever I get that installed.

There have been several successful local rebuilds of this hose. The rebuilders use a replacement hose in the closest inch size. Treatment of the restrictor installation can be an issue since it most likely does not fit exactly the same. He should retain the fat foam insulator as well, hopefully without the liter of fluid that soaked it. : ) They will need to pay attention to the orientation of the hose ends so that it can be reinstalled without twisting the hose.
HOH puts a swivel fitting at the hose connection to eliminate this problem. HTH

Alright hose is rebuilt and installed and is holding up good so far. No leaks at all. Leaving for Saskatoon tomorrow morning wish me luck.

Good luck on the trip. This link may provide a handy contact if you need quick assistance, even if it is only a
referral to help. It could be much more. There are several Canadians on the contact list and their email is available as a link on the screen name of each.
