Default Crank Case vaccum line

So i Found a nice hole in the vaccum line going from the crank case to a part of the intake mani. Tough after removal and it falling into a million pieces i found a bundle of copper wiring inside of the vac line....Is this Normal, im no expert but that doesnt seem right..[IMG]Click the image to open in full size.[/IMG]

Default Wire in the breather hose...

I would bet the previous owner put the wire in the hose to keep it from sucking closed under vacuum. The hose softens as it ages, becomes more pliable, and will draw the sides together under vacuum. On the Audi Coupe GT's/4000 CS quattros with the 2.2 liters, we often put springs in the hose to keep them from closing up. The bundle of copper wire is more rudimentary, but I think would provide the same affect.

All the 200q20vs have that wire in the OEM crankcase breather hose system. Audi called it a "flame deflector".
