Wasn't Quattro banned from some circuit racing precisely because it gave an unfair advantage?

I don't believe what you said. There only advantage a "dedicated" FWD has is generally lower weight and suspension tuned for handling instead of comfort. Audis are generally FWD vehicles with added traction at the rear wheels. Take a FWD car with similar weight, and you will see just how quickly it is penalized for essentially having a dead axle in the rear.

Absolutely- My 40 year-old 510 has the cabin sophistication of the UPS truck, but with slightly more of its 2100 lbs on the rear, and enough power to break loose the rear tires as necessary, was more of a kick to drive than anything else I've had. But its still a rough, crude, noisy POS to drive compared to the A4.

Default What don't you believe? That the A4 platform is a compromise?

You said it yourself, the A4 Quattro is essentially a FWD setup with added traction in the rear.

Here's a different way to look at it. Ask yourself this. Suppose the next generation A4 was to be FWD only, what could you change? Then ask the same question for Quattro only. For me, I could envision many changes (improvements) to be made, based strictly on the fact that the other chassis option need no longer be supported.

While FWD has generally the least desirable driving characteristics, it doesn't mean they go around a corner any slower. Any chassis can be made competitive given enough money and time. Witness the Chevy Cruz 1.6T winning the touring car championship, beating the likes of the BMW 320.

As far as Quattro being banned, I think that's going back like twenty years. Nowadays, the sanctioning bodies impose weight penalties and other restrictions to even up the field. The DTM series this year includes BMW as well as Mercedes and Audi. I believe everyone runs the identical (spec) monocoque chassis, but brings their own engines and drive trains. I'm assuming the new A5 DTM is Quattro, and I think BMW won the first round.

don't go for the 1.8T. My mechanic says those have been living hell and really problematic. Just go for a 2.8 instead. I like my B5 but seriously if I had the money I'd go for the B6. Having a newer car is always a plus.
