Default 1999 A6 2.8 Q fault p1392 Cam Position Sensor

1999 Audi A6 2.8L 30V. I just replaced the timing belt and both cam tensioners in the cylinder heads. I set all the timing marks correctly with the audi special tools. Now I have a 500 rpm idle and fault p1392 camshaft position sensor short to B+ or open which comes back as soon as I clear it.

I replaced the cam position sensor and the fault is still there. The car did not have this fault before I did the timing belt and cam tensioners.

Any thoughts on how I can get the idle up and the fault to go away?

I just checked my idle on value block 90. Bank one is at 0.0 and bank two is at -34.0. Both sensors are online and adapt when I rev the engine.

You got cam timing off flat out. So, you had the cam pulleys broken free and spinning right? Crank for sure dead on the mark, Set tension on the belt, then install the cam holders, then tighten the cam pulleys down. If you didnt break the pulleys loose, or tightened the cam pulleys before setting tension. it WILL make one cam way off and set a code.

I reset the cam timing with the pin in the motor and the motor at top dead center. The cam timing was slightly off. I still have the P1392 code..

So you do have the cam pully puller, and you are breaking the pulleys loose so they spin freely on the cams right? you never confirmed.

yes I do have the cam pulley puller and I am breaking the cams loose so they spin freely with the motor at top dead center.

My idle rpm went to 740 now that I reset the cams. An improvement.

In value block 90 on ross tech's diagnostic program Im getting 0.0 for bank one and -27.0 for bank two. When throttle is pushed these values move. Wouldn't this mean my cam sensors are online?

I checked the cam position under the valve cover on bank two as this fault (p1392) is for bank two. The cams are nearly right on. Moving the cams one tooth over would make them out of wack for sure.

you know, i never use that crank lock tool. I just will put the belt kind of on. then the lower timing cover and pully, and make certain the mark on the pully and mark on the cover line up. Then i set tension on the belt, then install the cam bar, then tighten the cam bolts. I havent had an issue yet and i do them on a regular basis. Things like the cam chain tensioner going bad, stretched chain, or even twisted cams can cause things to become off.
