Default Brights not working on Auto

I always keep the headlights on AUTO. Coming home tonight I try to turn on the brights and they don't come on. I can pull the stock backwards and they flash, but forwards to turn them on, no luck. I take the headlights out of Auto and turn them on manually and the brights work fine.

Am I going crazy and not remembering right? The brights are suppose to function on Auto, right?

There is a setting in MMI for High Beam --> Auto under instrument cluster (I think).

I've never seen in do anything but also don't drive much at night.

Yes. You have to turn them on. Car>Systems>Exterior Lighting>High Beam>On

Always wondered what that meant. Don't understand why they have the option to have them on or off?

That was my question too. I think it is to prevent automatic turning on of a high beam if lever is down by mistake.

VCDS setting to ROW enables flesh lights (55W halogen) as addition to high beam.

Which ones are those ?

I have ROW set and haven't noticed them.
Of course it seems like you turn on the surface of the sun with these high beams anyway compared to any other vehicle I've had....

Set it to USA and try them and you'll see the difference. Best way to test against a white wall or garage door from 15-20' away. Try set to ROW then USA and then you'll swtch it back. USA is a "cooler" way with the shutter on the magnified HID light but it's not as bright as the old fashioned incandescent/halogen bulb.

That was it. I turned that off thinking it meant that when the option to leave the lights on for a period of time after turning the car off would turn on the brights

ok, read the owner's manual on this subject trying figure out why this option exists with no luck.

Given the fact that if you turn off the car with the brights on, they will not be on when started later, why would anyone want to disable the brights when the lights are on auto?
