This project was put on hold due to the winter, but I was able to get at it again this weekend. My co-worker's Dad is a mechanic and was nice enough to come over and lend me a hand. Turns out I had it pretty close. There were two problems: first the timing belt was off by a tooth. Second, me and my dislexic self put the spark plug wires on in the incorrect firing order. Then it was just a matter of dialing in the ignition timing with the distributor and we got it fired up. Aside from it running, the good news is the original project of replacing the hydraulic lifters, worked. No more clicking sound coming from the lifters. Thanks for all the help!
