Default How to calculate wheel tuck difference

Howdy all,

I'm researching 20" or 19" rims for winter and will just use my stock 21's for summer. I have a 2012 Q7 S Line. As you all know S Lines have that extra wheel arch, extending over the wheel well. So a "tucked" wheel will look even more "tucked" with the S Line wheel arches.

Can someone check my logic on how to calculate just how much more tucked a wheel will be...

Stock 21's are:
21x10 with ET 44

Stock 20's are:
20x9 with ET 60

So for example if I were to get rims similar in spec to the stock 20" wheels, then to calculate the difference from my 21's to the 20's you would:
1. take the difference in width of the rims and divide by 2; (10-9)/2= 1/2".
2. a lower offset will pull push the wheel out, higher offset will pull the wheel into the wheel well. 60-44=16mm
16mm = .63 inches

Add the two together .5+.63=1.13"
That means stock 20x9 S Line wheels tuck in 1.13" when compared to stock 21x10 rims.

That sounds like a big difference. Is that right?

maybe i am old and my slang is outdated but tuck refers to the height and where wheel sits...

in any event, if you're trying to figure out what wheel to get which sits the same you may want to check out a wheel calculator... for the most part you will not find a wheel smaller that fits the same you will have to use spacers.

Tuck here is the measurement in and out from the outside? Offset is the measurement from the centre. I converted all to mm and got a difference of 28.5 or 1.1" so pretty close.
Its also to do with turning lock. The 9" rim is carried 3.5 mm or .1" further in on the inside. Add that to the difference in OA width and you get your 1.1" difference.
The problem is you assume the 10" to be standard when in fact the 9" is standard hence the wheel arch extensions on the 21x10" rims. When the 21" was introduced they had problems with clearing the steering arms which meant any factory built cars on 18 or 19 could not fit 21 without adaption. Again dont think of your model as the standard.
So for you yes its tuck but not really.
You can move down to 18, 19 or 20" rims. There are plenty of offset figures online. Obviously they get narrower as they get smaller so there is more room to play with tuck. There are also plenty of shims out there too.
The most common drop for people on 21" is 20" ( cant live with too much tuck visually I guess) and 275 45. The most common drop for 20" is to 18" (not so obvious without the arch extensions but a better winter option)

What rim and size are you thinking about?

PS traditionally tuck is clearance to arch all around. I think we should be using poke as the protrusion?!

All good information guys, thanks for "edumacating" me. Guess I am referring to poke instead of tuck.

Not wanting to drop down from 21" wheels to tiny 18" wheels, I'm looking to put winter tires on a 20" wheel instead.

Tirerack just got Bremmer Kraft Br05 in stock today for the Q7. It's totally different then what you normally see on Q7's. More of a BMW look. But that's what I'm after, something a bit different. And hey at $209 a rim for 20 inch wheels, that's a pretty good price.

They're 20x9 ET 55. So these will look real close to stock 20" rims in terms of poke.

it is a knock-off, replica wheel of bbs ch. do an oem 20" w/ dedicated snows and you're good. if you want a flush fitment do 14mm front spacer and a 25mm rear spacer.

/thread.
