Sounds like either a bad cam chain tensioner or timing belt tensioner.
You should really pop the hood and take a video of it. If the sound is coming from the belt side of the engine its probably the t-belt tensioner and will need a timing belt job (which at your mileage probably wouldn't be a bad idea) If its coming from the non belt side of the engine its more than likely the cam chain tensioner. Everything you would need can be found below. Click HERE to order or for more information. Let me know if you have any other questions. Jason |

Did you find a fix? I have the same issue and the same rattling noise on idle. it only starts when engine is warm, when the temp gauge reaches the middle. it goes away when I accelerate. but no noise at all on idle when the engine is a bit cooler. My 2001 TT just reached 89K today.

It's actually part of our maintenance procedure like every 60K to 120K. That slapping noise you here is the cam tensioner bouncing around. Basically its not holding the cam chain in place while at idle but when you accelerate, it goes away because it put tension to the chain..Its about a 4-6 hour job to get it fix. The part may cost around $250, its the labor that'll kill you...I got some temporary solution, but do not take it for granted.. Still gotta fix it.....Keep your heater on 80'F w/ the fan speed of 3-5 bars..Its should keep that knocking noise to minimal or may even disappear.....

Just got my car back today from getting the cam tensioner fixed.... Now, the car is a bit slow. Is it because I have to break it in still?? Don't know but it doesn't make that noise anymore. Sounds really clean when it starts...Drives good and all, but is bit slow...Guys, got any advice??
