Default Transmission Code

Are fault codes related to the automatic transmission (such as the code which indicates TC failure) stored in a non-volatile manner. In other words, if a car has had a dead battery for an extended period, will a previously generated fault code in this area still be present in the module (I am guessing they are in the TCU module, but maybe I'm wrong).
