Default Sports Diff Leak (maybe) - 2011 model

I just saw the blog regarding sports diff leak and decided no way my car had that leak. With 4,200 miles on it and with a 9/2010 build date. Audi would have worked out all the bugs by then..right? Got a good (keeping fingers crossed) water pump..but a bad thermostat..but the thermostat according to my Serv Rep is a precautionary service..which i do believe..but still got the recall letter. Now with me thinking about taking my car in for the thermostat replacement I thought I would just take a look at the diff to see if what people were talking about is happening to my car. And YES it is. Dang..can't Audi do some torture testing before selling to the public or are we the unwilling testers for Audi. So by 2012 or after the new customers may get a pretty good product. The leak however may just be grease from the CV joints as documented by TSB #2026049/1 and not diff fluid. Taking the car in tomorrow at 4 and will keep you guys updated. Also they are going to change my oil since it is so close to 5k. Anything else that needs to be checked..update the MMI etc.

Educate thyself.

This is only happening on MY11 cars, and has to do with how the 3rd party supplier assembled the half shafts on the Sport Diff, it's nothing Audi could have known about or controlled until it showed itself.

I just bumped the thread on AZ, trying to educate myself on this topic as we speak. Gonna get the garage around the corner to put the car up on the lift later today - if it's leaking I'm going to be a bit bent out of shape as I just had the car in for the thermostat and could have dealt with both at the same time. Oh well.

No oil on the garage floor at 10K miles, keeping my fingers crossed!

It's not oil from the diff, it's grease from the shaft fittings as it was described in the thread from those with it in talking to the techs. It has to get hot, then is slung onto the undercarriage, so there will seldom be signs on the floor of your garage.

Yep, there's only been a few cases of drops on a garage floor. Most have to look at the underside of the car to see any leakage.

It probably will not be a quick fix. My dealer is telling me they had to get the parts from the fatherland. I've been driving a loaner for just over a week while we wait.

I noticed it due to drips on the floor.....and then saw the spray underneath.

According to my dealer, it took approx 6 hours for the tech to fix. I was one of the first to have the TSB fix done (my car was in approx three days after the TSB release) and the parts were overnighted.....though it took an extra day. I would imagine that the parts are in short supply now that the word is out.

I'd encourage you to read the thread about this over on Audizine, there were many who had this before it was even a TSB, I personlly saw this leak checking out akim_hobo's exhaust months ago and told him to take it to the dealer to check it out.

Many who have had the TSB done had it leak the next day. Sadly, the TSB has the wrong info on what is causing it and how to fix it. The thread over there is pages long and goes over the trials, tribulations and what the actual cause and fix is.

Any thoughts on what will eventually go wrong if the leak is left unaddressed?

I'm trying to weigh just how much I should be looking for a leak, and how urgent fixing it would be if found.
