Ditto, thanks. Just heard back from Scott while it's under the knife at his shop and he reported one snapped rod and sticky flaps. Will see if he can run through your well documented procedure.

Snap!
That's with 142k miles on the odo, a good 100 or so of them in salty Michigan.

Cheers,
Keith

well that was an adventure.
on my 2000 A8, both actuators are stuck in the stage 1 low speed position. Really stuck: I spent an hour wiggling, spraying, prying, and cursing at one of them and I couldn't get it off. Whats more, the upper spindle is very weak, the aluminum has corroded so much so that the upper triangular stop had actually rotted away. Looks like I'll be hitting ebay...but at least I now know why I have no highway power

Yes the S8/S6 are a 2 stage manifold whereas the A6 4.2 is a 3 stage. It seems that the higher performance the car has the less stages (RS6 is single stage).

Some of the S8/S6 share inlet manifolds depending upon the engine build date but I think for the most part the 4.2 S cars manifolds are essentially the same.

If your flaps are sticky then you will need to disassemble the intake and clean it. Over thousands of miles and many year these collect oil and other nasties.

Oil "build up" from the PCV system is the main cause of ANY "intrusion" and it does NOT hinder interior operation..in fact it is the ONLY way that the inner pivots (rear...never a problem)get lubricated.
That's odd how these door gaskets out of this intake in front of me have swelled a bit from being oil soaked thus not allowing a complete seal of the flaps. I don't see how anything other than a periodic de-gunkifying would fix this. But to each his opinion...

There's a first time for everything just because you don't experience it or you don't believe it, doesn't mean it hasn't happened. A different manifold fixed the issue BTW.

Thanks for the info.

Wit my 2000 A8, the corrosion is so bad it has turned the aluminum pieces into a dark gray crumbly substance. the pieces that fit into the manifold snapped off clean at the manifold.

Luckily I found a manifold on ebay last week for $100
