Default motor.oil.question

hi.
i believe the q5 3.2 calls for 10w-40 motoroil.
i have some leftover castrol synthetic 10w-60 from my old m3.
is it ok to use this or not in the q5?
and if you know the reason yes or no, could you tell me please?
thanks.
-daniel.

60 is too thin when hot, should be 40 and needs to meet spec; VW 502.00 or higher

actually - 60wt will be too thick when hot but you are correct - need to use oil that meets the VW spec.http://www.audiusa.com/etc/medialib/....0023.File.pdf Those special wt oil for the M3 were developed to meet issues that the BMW engine had and the heavier weight oil kept the cams lubed under high heat. He could probably sell or give them away to BMW guys - I think those oils were expensive.

OK I stand corrected. I find all those viscosisty versus temp, shear, carbon absorbsion, pressure running temp. Pouring through a hole at a given rate versus how much faster at another temp. sightly confusing. There are so many experts all saying it in a different way. My understanding is you need to use the recommended oil for the recommended time given the stresses pressures and running temp of each engine.
I thought 60 will run at a higher temp IE keeping its viscosity when hotter but still running thinner, the problem being it may not give the support required....never mind I'll just stand corrected.

I thought a single figure oil like gear oil or axle oil with a high number like hypoy 90 is thicker based on its cold standing temp. I was sure the high number on the second part of 15W40 referred to almost the complete opposite.....never mind I stand corrected, but still a bit confused, which brings us right back to the OP

+1. Click on the viscosity chart on the left side and you can come engine oil viscosity to gear oil viscosity.
