Default reset check engine light?

I've looked and can't seem to find the right post on this. Is it possible to reset the check engine light on a '98 A4 30v w/o a VAG tool?

Yes, any OBD II tool can turn off the engine light and pull generic codes.

Harbor freight has a unit for around $50, most auto parts stores will scan for free.

Write the codes down before you clear them, re-post here with the codes.

Don't just replace everything that the parts store suggests, some problems tend to throw multiple codes.

"Check engine light" and "oil and service reminder" are not the same.

Unplug negative side of battery and let sit for a couple of minutes. I did it today for my 2000

This is a bad idea. It reset a lot more than just the CEL. Do it right. Use a tool.

Second that, spectacularly bad idea. Resetting the computer is also counter productive as the readiness codes are also not set.

Scan for codes, clear the code.

Sometimes codes are thrown and no work is needed.
