Default Travel Photography ..... what I need, which lens?

I am going to be taking photos with my dslr at a first holy communion and will also be going on vacation shortly afterward. I have standard lenses (75-300 and 28-80) but want to purchase a new lens good for portraits and travel photography. I want to spend around $150 and am not sure if I should get a 50mm f2.8 lens or a wide angle like a 28mm. I need a wide lens with a small aperture. which is better for me? any tips for travel photography would help also. thanks

There's nothing decent in that price range unfortunately.

Check B&H,JR, and adorama look into either sigma or tamron lenses. when you find what you like call them before you order. They will lower their prices to beat each other for the sale.

What camera are you using? Canon? Nikon? If you're using a Canon dslr, there's a MKII f1.8 50mm (nifty fifty). The body and mount are made of plastic, but the glass inside are quite good. You can read more about this lens in one of my online blogs.

I've used this lens a lot mainly with my portraits. I would recommend a wider lens for travel shots, but you already have that with the 28-80mm kit lens. Plus, wide lens with large apertures are very expensive. I've got more pics at the website below. I mainly use my nifty fifty and the 18-55mm kit lens.

Remember that the best equipment is what you already have in your bag. The way you see and compose your shots will ultimately make the biggest difference.

Good luck and bon voyage!

I like taking pictures when I'm on a travel but I'm not so particular with the type of camera and lens. Anyway, I'm not a professional photographer but I'm so grateful to know a few people who are into photography.

Do you think you might be better off asking at a camera forum, Venice? I do.

Nikon 35mm f/1.8G AF-S DX Lens for Nikon Digital SLR Cameras is my suggestion if you have a Nikon. It can be found on e-bay for about $150 if you're willing to look for used instead of new.

wow didn't realize how old this thread was....

Wonder what the OP decided on getting??
