Minimum rotor thickness

Does anyone know that the minimum rotor (disk) thickness is on my 2007 Q? I've just received Hawk LTS Pads and sensors and my plan is to just have the lip on the disks machined down and re-use the rotors if possible. If necessary, I'll order new rotors. Also, how many miles do you have left, once the pad warning light comes on?

The warning light is only for pad thickness and has nothing to do with rotors. When the warning light comes on the amount of driving you have before changing the pads depends on how you drive. I wouldn't go more than a 1000 km and that's pushing it. Strict dealships will replace the pad immediately the light goes on./

There seems to be some dicrepencey between the EU and the US on rotors. As I undertand it US dealerships are "required" to change the rotors when the pads are changed, which seems insane to me as if more than doubles the cost. Here in the EU I have change the pads twice on one Q7 and never changed the rotors. The do have a lip and I assume the third pad change will also require a rotor change.

Why bother machining the lips?

Wear is a mere 1mm per side total reduction of 2mm to replacement

Disc/Rotor thickness 34mm
Minimum Rotor thickness 32mm

Its the same spec accross all models or rims size

Well, I'm right at the minimum thickness now. I bought the car with 36000 miles on the clock and I'm at 51000 now. I don't know if the car is on it's second set of rotors now but in any case I'm replacing the rotors with Frozen Rotors.

Standards for miniumu rotor thickness appear to be ver dependent on your country... :-/

Here in portugal our 07/01 Q7 had its first rotor replace ment at 150,000 km - went through four sets of pads. Note that this was an Audi dealership and associated Audi shop.

None of this "must replace rotors and pads at the same time" crap.

None of this "oh noes! The rotors have worn by 2 mm - replace them noaw!".

I think both the pads/rotor and the 2mm wear limit is trumped up rubbish designed to screw over the uninformed by turning a 450 Euro pad replacement into a 1200 Euro pad + rotor replacement.

But that's just me.

Its not just you... its me too. They are soft material to match pad wear but mine looked perfect at first pad replacement (despite wear) so they stayed. I will certainly monitor them really carefully. Slightest sign of a crack or pedal hop they're out of there but for now still probably the best rotors I have ever had!
