Default Redline in "S" mode

I've finished the break-in period on my 2.O TT, and have started driving a little firmer and using the S mode a lot more. I've noticed that even without giving full throttle, the S mode often takes it up into the dashed red zone (or even solid red zone) on the tach before shifting. I've never had a car that flirted with the redline this easily or this often before shifting, but I assume this is normal?

My questions for the collective wisdom of the forum are:

I assume the car has a rev limiter that will protect me from myself, and not let me overrev the engine?

Separate from that, is it a bad idea to bump into this rev limiter, and should I be driving in a way that keeps the revs out of the lower end of the red?

Thanks for any guidance. I plan to own this car awhile, and having been (generally) nice to it during the break-in period I don't want to trash it now.

Well, IMHO driving in S mode is for tracks. Whey not be a little smoother on the streets and get better mileage?

The car will protect itself electronically and not allow itself to be over-revved, but would I do it every gear? No, but hey to each his (or her) own.

More revs equal more wear. Perhaps another way to look at it.

Be cool when you can - so you can "drive it like you stole it" when you feel like it. At least that's my mantra.

Have real fun - join ACNA and take it to a track!! Yahoo!!

I recently took my '07 GTI to a track day and found it much better to shift with the paddles than to use S mode. (Yeah, it's a different car, but the weight is similar and the engine is the same.) What I found was that in S mode it always went to redline, but over 5500 RPM or so the engine made more noise than power. My lap times were better if I shifted at about 5500. Your mileage may vary.

I've had the same experience in my 2009 TT. If it does that, what's the sense of even having the S mode? (rhetorical) Much prefer the paddles or manual shift of the gear stick. More control on when and which direction you want to shift. Leave S alone and go F-1.

Interesting - I quite like the S mode, it shifts a bit higher than D without going to the redline if I'm not really on it, and I found on the track, at least when still trying to get my turn in points, etc. right, that it shifted in the right place basically every time and allowed me to focus on my corner entries and exits.

Yeah that's my point for sure. I was really into driving the right place and doing the right thing at as high of a speed as possible - and never had the mind to grab the paddles. I said I would, but got caught up in everything else I needed to concentrate on.

I'll be back at Watkins Glen next month, so maybe I'll be advanced enough to grab the paddles! I AM a noob at the tracks for sure.
