Crankshaft sprocket bolt - how to remove?
Hi! Which is the best way to remove the crankshaft bolt in order to replace the cranckshaft seal? There is a note on Blauparts about damaging the crankshaft sprocket. I'm worried about that since I'll be doing it soon. Anyway, how do I keep the crankshaft from moving while trying to brake the bolt loose? Using VAG tool 3242? Is that bolt too tight? Thanks!

Ok thanks! So if I undertood right, by inserting the crank locking pin, it will be strong enough to hold the crankshaft while I'll try to loose the bolt, correct? I was concerned about breacking the pin.

I also would use a battery electric powered impact gun like the one made by Snap On. I feel that the center drive
of the impact gun stresses the crankshaft sprocket less than a very long lever bar but this is just my opinion
from removing a few of these. Try to made sure the crankshaft locking pin has been threaded into the access hole properly. Some reports indicate difficulty with the threads on the tool not wanting to go in far enough.

I do not recommend any sort of impact device on the crankshaft bolt. No need for it, you might damage the key on the sprocket, and there is no way to get the gun in there if you are in service position. Just get a good socket, a strong breaker bar, and a four foot pipe.

Humm, this key is my concern. This is what Baluparts are talking about. But the sprocket can be replaced. But what about the key hole on the crankshakt, is it easy to damage? They are talking about this too. And this would be a very, very bad thing to happen. Any experience about this? Thanks!

Google is your friend.

it's about $32.
Seems to me a grade 8 socket head cap screw could be ground down....

I've never damaged either doing a timing belt, but I have seen both damaged. Remember, if the sprocket key shears, and the sprocket moves on the crank, that can be similar to the belt jumping, so make sure you remove the belt first. Inspect the key for damage after you remove it.
Do it the right way and you will have no issues.
