As it appears there will be no B8 S4 Avant, go for it (Q5). However, it is dependent on what size family you have. For me, there are only two of us, so I drive around most of the time the with the back seats folded down, which gives me plenty of cargo space in the S4.

heh - funny you should ask this. I have been convinced for the past 6 months that I'd be buying a Q5. I've always been a "sports sedan" type of person, but I really wanted something that had a bit more utility to it (even though my wife has a new X5). So anyway, I went and drove the Q5 - it was nice - if you get it with ADS, you have a pretty sporty rig. But something kept bugging me about it.
So then my wife and I went to drive the S4 and it was pretty much game over at that point. For one thing, the S4 has a WAY bigger "trunk" than the Q5 - which is good for hauling all my gear around (sailing). Back seat space isn't quite as good with the S4, but I rarely drive people around - usually just my kids. The nail in the coffin was when I showed my wife the Q5. Her comment: "you're kidding right? that car isn't even close to your style" HA! And when she sat inside: "this thing isn't near as nice as my X5" (and she's right). So that's it. I now have a Meteor Gray Prestige with carbon fiber inlays and sport diff on the way (MT of course). |

We replaced my wife's slightly more than a year old 335xi coupe (AKA "the crapmobile") with a Q5 in August to accommodate our newborn. Then we replaced my 2007 S4 with a 2010 S4 in November.
I've got a car seat (convertible, presently rear facing) behind the passenger seat in my S4. I'm six feet tall, and, with the driver's seat adjusted for me, I can sit comfortably in either the passenger seat (in front of the car seat) or behind the driver's seat. Of course, since I'd only be sitting behind the driver if my wife is driving, the back seat will be more than comfortable for me (should I ever find myself in it). In the Q5, the car seat is behind the driver. We use the Q5 almost exclusively when it is the 3 of us going out, and whoever isn't driving typically sits in the back with the baby. Since that means there's nobody in the passenger seat, room is plentiful. It is also plentiful for me to be able to drive with the car seat behind me. Over Thanksgiving, we loaded the baby, me, my wife, and my parents all into the Q5 for a black Friday shopping excursion. Plenty comfortable, and plenty of room left over for what we bought, even with a diaper bag, stroller, etc. in the back. They feel very similar inside--lots of common layout elements, etc. But they drive totally differently. I enjoy the way the Q5 drives--IMHO, it blows both the X3 and the Lexus RX out of the water (my wife and I both found the former crappy and the latter too soft). It doesn't compare to my S4 in any respect (power, handling, etc.) except gas mileage (it does better, surprisingly), but I don't expect it to. |

Yes, it took a shoehorn to get the infant carrier into the back and a crowbar to get him out. Also, tremendous upper body strength and flexibility to rival a member of cirque du soleil. We're all much happier with the Q5. |

I hear you bro. My twins have a little more time left in car seats and they'll be active in whatever the hell they're going to be active in, in the next 4 years. So, the S5 I was drooling over with it's two beautiful doors, became the deal breaker. That's why I, quite happily, chose the S4. Honestly, I didn't want a V8 either, seems just too much like something my dad would have. I know, I know... don't yell at me. I can't help it. It was all that time in the Olds 88, it scarred me.

I am considering a Q5 simply to get the beautiful hooded classic Audi looking dashboard in the Q5. The A4, S4, A5, S5, all have what I regard to be a very cheap looking "acres of silver plastic" dash. The Q5 dash IMHO is the best Audi has to offer at the moment (in my price range) and the instrument panel is what I have to look at all the time I am driving.

Possibly. I have been in several B8's and really acn't stand looking at the dashboard that looks like it belongs in a 1980's Chrysler product. The dynamics of the Q5 are decent and it does offer practical advanages the S4 does not. That being said, I don't think many people would consider these 2 vehicles as alternatives. I simply hate the dash on the S4 and the S5 - which is what I would really get if I could stomach the dash.
