I had the same question and I got this image from some ones post. I think it is the unit underlined in red. ...to the right of the crank shaft.

Neither does mine. It is pegged all the way to the left? When you turn on the car does it move at all?
I've been told you can check the sender using VAG COM but I don't have that. I've been also told that the senders rarely fail... not really sure what is going on.
