Default Too many contacts in my iphone?

Does anyone know how to expand the memory of the MMI system to allow for more contacts in your iphone? At this point it seemed to top off at 2000.

I found the problem to be that I had many duplicates because I had exchange and icloud contact folders, and the dupes are merged on the iPhone but not on the MMI. Did some housecleaning to bring the number down to below 2000. And put the ones I don't use often in iCloud (kind of like an archive) and turn sync off unless I need to find them.
