The best advertisement for Audi would be to bring the A4 2.0 or 3.0 models period. The A3 is too small and Q7 too big for a family of four. I have been asking Audi of America to accelerate the bringing over of these models and the recent response was:
Thank you for contacting Audi of America. We appreciate and share your enthusiasm for diesel-powered vehicles. "As you know, diesel has long been a preference of European Audi owners because of the fuel efficiency and increased torque it provides. With the current growing interest in these engines in America, our customers often ask why we are not bringing more of them here. We are deeply interested in doing so, but for now we will import the Audi Q7 TDI 50-state clean diesel and the A3 2.0 TDI. We do indeed hope to see other models follow, but the process is not so easy as simply sending the European models to America. Historically, diesel fuel has been very dirty in the USA. It is cleaner now, but not yet so clean as in Europe. That means we have to develop diesel engines just for the USA, or at least adapt the engines for the less refined diesel. This is a major challenge both in time and in investment. We are pleased to be able to offer two models already, but we sympathize with your wish to see other models, such as the A4 and Audi Q5, join them and will be happy to forward your comments to those involved in the decision process. Again, thank you for writing and for your interest." Well, if Volkswagen can bring Jetta with the 2.0 L TDI, why Audi can't bring over A4. It's the same engine, Audi uses in A3. If you really want to make the change, put pressure on Audi of America by letting them know that we want A4 TDI! |

Absolutely. Either engine would be fantastic here. Honestly I think the 3.0 would be overkill for many, the 2.0 is a great torquey little motor!

Diesel fuel is really on its way up again...I paid $2.92 earlier this week. That's higher than PUG and it's one of the 1st thing the prospective diesel auto buyers sees

here in PA diesel is more expensive than premium 93 octane regular gas. and not by just a few pennies. I saw as much as 20 cents a gallon more the other day. Makes we rethink my future q7 TDI order thats for sure

Paying $2.92/gal for diesel is cheap, when premium is currently $3.19/gal.
http://www.sanjosegasprices.com/Rott...068/index.aspx regular (87) $2.99/gal premium (91) $3.19/gal diesel $2.93/gal |

I have owned a few 1.9tdi's and a 2.0tdi and the 6cyl TDis as well. If you have a manual gearbox, and FWD there is about 20-25% difference between the 2.0fsi and the 2.0tdi. Once you start to compare the cars with auto transmission and Quattro there is maybe 10-15% difference in most driving situations. There is definitely better low end power in the diesels, however, the rev range is terrible, the power starts at around 2000rpm and is dipping terribly by around 3500rpm, so 1500rpm to play with before changing gears, which is fine on an auto but it makes a manual a real ball ache to drive. I will never own another manual diesel again for this reason alone. Everyone always goes on about the torque on a diesel, however all torque really is is a figure you multiply by the revs to give you BHP, which is the figure that really matters. And regarding noise, they are getting much better, the new 170bhp 2.0tdi is a massive step in the right direction, but coming from a 3.2 V6 fsi which isn't exactly the most refined petrol engine ever made, the diesel sounds awful. I like diesels, I have a BMW 123d which is 250bhp, does the sprint to 60mph in 6.3 seconds and returns 40-mpg round town and 55mpg on a run. However the 2009 manual A4 tdi I had for a week when my 3.2 A6 was in the shop was no where near as refined, struggled to get 35mpg over the week and was seriously lacking in power, and sounded really nasty. It was the older 140bhp engine though, but it is meant to be the more economical one. Diesels work if you don't do short journeys, (less than 10 miles) can sit at 70mph, and don't do lots of town work, this is when they really start to shine in the economy areas. I had a 3.0tdi quattro on loan, and round town on sub 10 mile journeys it was actually worse economy wise than my 3.2 petrol. So you have to be very, very careful when buying diesel that it is the right engine for YOU. |
