Default 91 200 auto - strut insert, wheel bearing

Please advise....

If I recall correctly, the strut insert can be r&r'd from under the hood on the 5000/100/200. If so, do I clamp the spring? Jack up the car? I plan to use KYB GR-2's, with stock springs. (drivers side is currently blown)

I have a bad front wheel bearing, and it seems that it may be easier/cheaper to r&r the whole strut assembly/hub/bearing off a junker than to have the bearing pressed out/in. I'd be willing to buy a press for future tasks like bushings and whatnot depending on recommendations. I believe the bad one is on the passenger side. It gets quieter in right turns and louder, with more vibrations going straight or left.

Thanks in advance.

No need to clamp the spring, just remove the shaft nut and scribe mark the 3 mm nuts and remove the upper retainer. I assume you have the long deep socket to remove the strut threaded sleeve, if not I have used a large channel lock water pump pliers after soaking sleeve area with penetrating fluid or rust buster. Bad wheel bearings can be done in car if you purchase the special tool from Harbor Freight. Good luck.

Thank you very much for the response. Do you have any specs on the long socket you refered to?

I havent fixed the bearing yet. My other expenses just shot past my abilities. Hoping to address the struts and bearing in about 2 weeks.

Anyone know if the hub itself can be removed any easier than the bearing?

When you pull the hub (I used a Hub Shark), the inner part of the bearing pulls free from the outer and then has to be removed from the hub.

Then you pull the outer from the strut housing. I nearly put a permanent bend in the 3/4" steel plate of the puller before I realized I should reverse the supporting fixtures.

I am ready to order my front wheel bearing. I feel that I've read on here somewhere about recommended brands of bearings, but cannot find that info.

If anyone could give me their input as far as brand choices go, I would greatly appreciate it.

Standard good bearings.. SKF, FAG, INA, etc.

I actually lugged home some cheaper Italian made ones, the last time I was in europe... lol. It was something like $35 as opposed to a hundred or whatever they got me for last time.

Just don't get chinese ones.
