Default S5 really a 335i competitor?

I think that the direct comparisons of the A5 3.2 being a 335i competitor are incorrect. The S5 seems to actually be the direct competitor to the 300hp BMW coupe, even price wise.

For example, a 335i spec'd to match a base S5 will need the following extra options:

- All wheel drive: $1800 (expected for 2008)
- Sport package: $1000
- Adaptive steering: ($1400)

This would put the base price of a 335xi at around $45,000. I expect the base price of an S5 to range between $48,000 to $50,000 (up to 2k more than the current S4).

I would personally cross-shop the 335i with the S5 since both would probably fall with $5,000 of each other when similarly equipped, with the S5 being a couple of K more expensive to justify the 50 more horsepower and larger V8.

Anyone else agree?

Default i think the audi is positioning their models around BMW

328 > A5 > 335i > S5 > M3 > RS5

Default I would say so also. I also thought I remember Audi saying that it would be priced above the

current A4 Cabrio. If that's truly the case, the S4 Cabrio that I saw at the dealer today had a $65k number on the sticker from Audi with no added dealer options. Makes one think...

Default To me, priced above the current A4 Cab would mean ~$48k base since the Cab is $47k base.

Default I still pricing will be relative to their own line-up (specifically the A4 and S4 cabs.) and

not so much the BMW models... typical of Audis the (eventual, hopefully!) RS5 will compete with the next gen. M3, but the S5 will be more comparable in price... it might just be the wine speaking, but that's what I think... for now.

Default It seems to me that the A5 is between the 328i and 335i coupes, so the S5 is just above the 335i.

And the RS5 will compete with the M3.

Default Probably - although throw some options on that car and it's now $55k not

counting the B&O sound system or back-up cameras. I think that's being more realistic for what we will see, since Audi doesn't generally bring any of their models over here as strictly base models without any options. There is obviously the choice to order the car 90 days out, but with no S-Line pkg, no NAV, no Convenience, and no nice leather, it probably won't be very desirable... No question about it, the A5 will be over $50k and the S5 will be deep into the $60k range.

Default Traditionally, Audi doesn't have as many options as say BMW...

If the A5 lands at ~$40k base, which makes the most sense for the lineup, and they offer in the same ball park of options as the A4, then it won't be able to reach $55k. The A4's only have ~$9k worth of options available, and that's including options I think most people wouldn't bother with like the sun shades. It's reasonable to expect a well optioned A5 to land at $50k.

The S4 offers even less options, so a well optioned S5 assuming a starting price of $50k would probably just hit $60k at worst.

I suppose they could add options to approach what the A6 offers which is able to hit $16k in options. That would make your prediction a reality if you want absolutely every option available.

Really hope they release pricing information with the Geneva launch. I'm ready to stop speculating and start figuring out if I can afford one of these things. =P
