Default I'd say 2010 for the TDI.

Default If you go TDI go Auto/TIP/DSG

call it what you like but every diesel I've ever driven is great for the first 10 minutes. Then you realise you spending your whole life changing gear to stay on the turbo or you've just run out of revs. The 6 cylinder ones from both Audi & BMW are better but still IMHO better suited to an Auto box of some type.

Most TDIs we have in the UK are the 4 pots and its interesting - they can all pull away very very quickly, often with too much torque for the tyres. Then almost in an instant they rev out in 1st, bang it into 2nd and you're off again assuming you managed to keep the revs up for the turbo. With a TDi power is delivered in big lumps of torque over a short rev range - above and below this range there is nothing. And I mean NOTHING. So take the hard work out and let a good Auto box sort out what gear to be in. All IMHO
